I could not reproduce this in
GNU Emacs 22.2.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.9)
of 2008-04-27 on raven, modified by Debian

so it's apparently fixed and you should ask for an upgrade of the Ubuntu
package.
