Relevant .emacs: '(dired-auto-revert-buffer (quote dired-directory-changed-p)) '(global-auto-revert-mode t) '(global-auto-revert-non-file-buffers t) although disabling those 3 makes no difference to the behaviour. What's strange is that inotify_add_watch is being called 22 times for the current directory. I've debugged inotify_callback a little. The expectation of this code to_read = 0; if (ioctl (fd, FIONREAD, &to_read) == -1) xsignal1 (Qfile_notify_error, build_string ("Error while trying to retrieve file system events")); buffer = xmalloc (to_read); n = read (fd, buffer, to_read); if (n < 0) { is that the read will succeed, however to_read is very often 0, so it's not surprising the read fails. (what does xmalloc do when its argument is 0?) My understanding was that the callback should only be called when there are actual inotify events to process, so this behaviour is somewhat surprising to me. I can add in skipping the read if to_read == 0, but I suspect that's just papering over the cracks. That's strange, isn't it? If to_read is zero, how come pselect indicated that FD has stuff to be read? > (what does xmalloc do when its argument is 0?) Nothing, usually. > My understanding was that the callback should only be called when > there are actual inotify events to process, so this behaviour is > somewhat surprising to me. Exactly. Could it be that we are somehow trying to read the same event 22 times, and then only the 1st time succeeds? > I can add in skipping the read if to_read == 0, but I suspect that's > just papering over the cracks. The important question is, IMO, how come pselect says this FD is ready to be read, when there's nothing to be read. Btw, it would be nice to have errno description added to the error message. Thanks. If to_read is zero, how come pselect > indicated that FD has stuff to be read? pselect didn't, but we fooled ourselves into thinking it did. I suspected this was down to Gnus tickling some file descriptor handling bug, and since the only code I could see in wait_reading_process_output() that looked like it might be messing things up was under a HAVE_GNUTLS define, I rebuilt without GnuTLS, and the problem went away. After debugging some more, here's my current theory (look around line 4904 of process.c: 1. the file descriptor for inotify events is checked by xg_select (since HAVE_GLIB == 1) using the Available fd_set 2. there is nothing to be read, so xg_select returns nfds = 0. However, the inotify FD is still set in Available, which is unexpected but not wrong. 3. We then run: for (channel = 0; channel < FD_SETSIZE; ++channel) if (! NILP (chan_process[channel])) { struct Lisp_Process *p = XPROCESS (chan_process[channel]); if (p && p->gnutls_p && p->gnutls_state && ((emacs_gnutls_record_check_pending (p->gnutls_state)) > 0)) { nfds++; eassert (p->infd == channel); FD_SET (p->infd, &Available); } } which checks if any of the TLS file descriptors have waiting data that hasn't been indicated by xg_select, and sets the corresponding bit in the Available fd_set. In my case one of them does, so we increment nfds 4. We then reach if (no_avail || nfds == 0) continue; for (channel = 0; channel <= max_input_desc; ++channel) { struct fd_callback_data *d = &fd_callback_info[channel]; if (d->func && ((d->condition & FOR_READ && FD_ISSET (channel, &Available)) || (d->condition & FOR_WRITE && FD_ISSET (channel, &write_mask)))) d->func (channel, d->data); } around line 5085 and loop over all the FDs we know about, checking to see if any of them are set in the Available fd_set 5. the inotify FD is still set in Available, so we call its callback function, which tries to read data when it shouldn't Step 5 should never happen, but because step 2 did not clear the Available fd_set, and the HAVE_GNUTLS code incremented nfds, we think there's data to be read. The following patch, which zeros out Available when the GNUTLS code does its thing has fixed things for me. I've convinced myself it has no bad side-effects, but would appreciate a second opinion, especially since the option also exists to just zero out Available unconditionally when nfds==0. diff --git a/src/process.c b/src/process.c index 9d8fa22..dcc004e 100644 --- a/src/process.c +++ b/src/process.c @@ -4913,6 +4913,10 @@ wait_reading_process_output (intmax_t time_limit, int nsecs, int read_kbd, data is available in the buffers manually. */ if (nfds == 0) { + fd_set tls_available; + int set = 0; + + FD_ZERO (&tls_available); if (! wait_proc) { /* We're not waiting on a specific process, so loop @@ -4933,7 +4937,8 @@ wait_reading_process_output (intmax_t time_limit, int nsecs, int read_kbd, { nfds++; eassert (p->infd == channel); - FD_SET (p->infd, &Available); + FD_SET (p->infd, &tls_available); + set++; } } } @@ -4950,9 +4955,12 @@ wait_reading_process_output (intmax_t time_limit, int nsecs, int read_kbd, nfds = 1; eassert (0 <= wait_proc->infd); /* Set to Available. */ - FD_SET (wait_proc->infd, &Available); + FD_SET (wait_proc->infd, &tls_available); + set++; } } + if (set) + Available = tls_available; } #endif } From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Thu Aug 27 05:43:03 2015 Received: (at control) by debbugs.gnu.org; 27 Aug 2015 09:43:03 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:39685 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from ) id 1ZUti2-0005kI-K5 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 27 Aug 2015 05:43:02 -0400 Received: from mout.gmx.net ([212.227.15.19]:51396) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from ) id 1ZUthz-0005jo-Oi; Thu, 27 Aug 2015 05:43:00 -0400 Received: from detlef.gmx.de ([87.146.46.65]) by mail.gmx.com (mrgmx003) with ESMTPSA (Nemesis) id 0MfVYB-1Z6KJl3ZrH-00P5Sd; Thu, 27 Aug 2015 11:42:59 +0200 From: Michael Albinus To: Rasmus Subject: Re: bug#21361: 25.0.50; global-auto-revert-mode and file-notify-error References: <871tep3yk2.fsf@gmx.us> Date: Thu, 27 Aug 2015 11:42:57 +0200 In-Reply-To: <871tep3yk2.fsf@gmx.us> (rasmus@gmx.us's message of "Thu, 27 Aug 2015 10:50:21 +0200") Message-ID: <87fv35m5i6.fsf@gmx.de> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/25.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Provags-ID: V03:K0:WDqOiB+Kn1M6EZvLLDkQUc0vC0Dt4nAQpZe8n0AEa0MzZspM7p1 2xiy1DJVTCNSjBCz+VIyfYwkd1oGbFM2kA0fbqLKby4ESK3Zr4pLeH254a8dx4SJxWf+2IG MY11ZmSqSsNpjaYXq3W9+4Kf66Ru0hTJXCdsa4IkCfPnFA88iRFtwHqgaxiLlXimUKnq4ag 10p8gh0XF8GEee0oNcR8w== X-UI-Out-Filterresults: notjunk:1;V01:K0:3qV9G3HX7ZM=:2ciry2Wxm0Uw8xjmBqzuMU VKpkkEhZJbIjpY5PNgcZ95iGZtaP3qJMkE94GVuzQMg57LGH0FE7mVCDLnjmGTwbxgJ5EqcLB u2enhKNQSftBpj1QES3iW6x0Z9QU2eC3UwmxXijXZ7UapSjfJeeL8unUdOvcVhqkBVZcGkLe4 eeHFVIMfkXF0y+0zwhHmptOi/ZY17nk2AkTk8tqc1L9RHHCNQ/deNUP9d7NlEb87i4oJJhNZw GzYW1Pk8BQMDjf9qySHdYDwe7PGXAiKc30hcPbWsB2oxcK7yT46OkHhzATX56dUGctPuemYxf WeQyXxe90cRcPhrX+QHjFgmFo1N2BgKcPfbrHZMn2e4ZJ4oSz1P901lY1mWFJwzyi2p/BxEnl 5vPC+eVEQ5cCj68V1qBE2gOX0obh7qo0AlSXpY6QCNr5W0sAo8VbM23aqKMw8jX833jsPBDWW DObbvI671zwBDM1f5LVhQZXNWNqufuTm2yXZAK853HoJDBr7Nrgpyz4ZdoUK8XwUo0l1cvV/d dLvhLMjGlVyjZvY8EBPs1FDCEASctPwcnrh8jdCDa1eDWnKn7GAfmmuFqSmKRnHL5B1ODLdx4 WjYNQrf5zMHVzOR+a72rcz4cWzUmRHDmG92yK6kiOX8+VggEHW+NKZfgN/0eOHpJwxMV6XuL/ CAv/HhVe+N5kpsA/oG0KW1t5yatl+exTkpn2YjlFDOrSICbJU0J3LRYCJkAFDRQvhvPFomzMQ zxVbA6GhL/TnKJrW79UAWUbPf0iTJ6RzvqK9Mw== X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: control Cc: 21361@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.15 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) forcemerge 21337 21361 thanks Rasmus writes: > Hi, Hi, > Recently I get the following error whenever I read mails with Gnus and > global-auto-revert-mode is on: > > Debugger entered--Lisp error: (file-notify-error "Error while trying > to read file system events") > > This is the complete backtrack.
