If I understand correctly, then you have a script doing something like the following: $ mkdir "a dir" $ cd "a dir" $ cp -v /dev/null $(pwd) cp: target ‘dir’ is not a directory First of all, I want to mention that the invoked 'pwd' is a builtin in most shells, which means you have to e.g. specify the path like /bin/pwd to be sure to invoke the coreutils version of it. Second, the output of pwd(1) is correct - i.e., there is no such thing than escaping characters. Instead, the caller has to care about proper quoting: $ cp -v /dev/null "$(pwd)" ‘/dev/null’ -> ‘/tmp/a dir/null’ Therefore, I'm marking this as "not a bug" in our software. But in case of questions please don't hesitate to discuss this further by replying to this bug. A very, very small comment. This is all true but the wording makes it sound somewhat like a recommendation to use /bin/pwd in order to get the coreutils program. I don't think that was intended. I think instead it was intended only that normally the user has called the builtin pwd and the builtin is not coreutils and therefore nothing we would do about it here. Reports about the builtin would go to the shell. One can compare the builtin by using both a plain "pwd" version and comparing against the "/bin/pwd" coreutils version in order to test differences between them. If they work the same then it is very unlikely it would be a bug since they are independent implementations. For typical scripting it would be normal to continue to use the plain "pwd" and use the shell builtin version. But proper shell quoting is still needed. :-) Bob From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun May 31 04:15:58 2015 Received: (at 20679) by debbugs.gnu.org; 31 May 2015 08:15:59 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:33880 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from ) id 1YyyPW-0004D5-9u for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 31 May 2015 04:15:58 -0400 Received: from mout.kundenserver.de ([212.227.126.131]:56771) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from ) id 1YyyPT-0004Cp-4S for 20679@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 31 May 2015 04:15:55 -0400 Received: from [192.168.101.10] ([217.86.86.63]) by mrelayeu.kundenserver.de (mreue003) with ESMTPSA (Nemesis) id 0Lfnn4-1ZQwUY0078-00pKc0; Sun, 31 May 2015 10:15:48 +0200 Message-ID: <556AC330.5080602@bernhard-voelker.de> Date: Sun, 31 May 2015 10:15:44 +0200 From: Bernhard Voelker User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/31.7.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Bob Proulx , 20679@debbugs.gnu.org Subject: Re: bug#20679: A bug of pwd References: <5566C485.5010701@bernhard-voelker.de> <20150530202757854069229@bob.proulx.com> In-Reply-To: <20150530202757854069229@bob.proulx.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Provags-ID: V03:K0:4evbYLxRJtHhHLWAwxrhLci3RD7H7Gb1d/2sOQ+4YnZpDXWAVLu joS/3jvqlKN2AAXGjprnFmTrYXsEmGen3PW1F671DcpkqRii8wCkvUuaB109mbFsvLW7+i6 GiIODLuG0B2xPvFfYmRh/lLpRIvf9zVZqd9B6OXRlUu0Mepmtry4m6RSeU7eaYD0dUepBoJ YkyWFVMxBj2TcupImlS3A== X-UI-Out-Filterresults: notjunk:1;V01:K0:ylEjOJsSyoQ=:8172FiyQJKfhxdCprW6sZp SaoClFLEDhAoE4Kbkw1l1yuOncIgz0F+sjgoGmJZDLAnXcBMlZ63S5Splm9ICZNYMMorcVdKK LvziYoN2unGWeJDTeG28+6J85XdoDVl+Akh21tP0KvZ8Xisk7A3HvIS5MHCqyl7UWSDpmI2Yu Sw6lHl4IkG8aIgaD5NxmdCbQtF/dkDcqMUmXKKhk2C0fwqrmLZ6dRmxFGX9ngmixe4D9orKJZ 8R5zneUXGsQJxqs5TKV++tYP8hWj/6oa/6HfRFEUdV69c0Htn0+Avt13hQRGiUrvhOLzlO+fp w/59dvQKHeT1+q9uLDTHTb0tfrLweaouzR2mB6oMVGsBXoK8ZKk5UGqq+Wq2vbXlp02jzGzRM kOWrn+tYXYVGjPi4ytpdxFrIq06b4vtBBWseS6NHaGQoW/LU+CBHpYYVgv+TdCNmVXPWyCt9H Wtd+yTF3j3tPK2l3xS79evBQVC6KYUHbXN8RX3x8TbpdSbimh5Sga0GTxyYa/eXs4mtOAVZwN YMpJI5hQGGzD1yOBusJBRpA2q910nvFpN3WbHibfIKkvSNUvu+gi+Jhg2zG8/fgLbMTIKLIX1 /ZYw1irMOyg/DqOHUISGZN1dVfoCOR9usLDRmV5EJqBQ5u6xTbyAX36PWUR887MOuQPD3JTKe 4E2oKIsFM+BTU8GnA/+eK1SeAFdYQeRMvS5b2MWZ/FZ03Fw== X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 20679 Cc: =?UTF-8?B?5b6Q5YW05pe6?= X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.15 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) On 05/31/2015 04:35 AM, Bob Proulx wrote: > Bernhard Voelker wrote: >> First of all, I want to mention that the invoked 'pwd' is a builtin >> in most shells, which means you have to e.g. specify the path like >> /bin/pwd to be sure to invoke the coreutils version of it. > > A very, very small comment.
