Is there a specific reason > you are using the outdated AUCTeX 11.87 instead of a current version? Not really. However I never got the elpa to work for me, so I prefer to install 11.88 from source. I did it and I failed. I run ./configure EMACS=/opt/emacs24/bin/emacs (because my old Kubuntu ships only emacs23.) Then running make gives the following error In end of data: tex-jp.el:848:1:Warning: the function `japanese-TeX-coding-ejsu' is not known to be defined. Wrote /home/oub/ALLES/emacs/site-lisp/packages/auctex-11.88/tex-jp.elc make: *** [lisp] Error 1 I have never seen such an error, (well I have seen similar things in Xemacs, but there you have Mule vs No Mule Xemacs and japanese fails for no Mule Xemacs, but GNU Emacs has Mule activated per default). Maybe I should upgrade GNU emacs (24.3.50.1)? This seems to be fine until I use the vc-mode checkin. Let us say I have made a change to some source file: C-x v v ; input comments C-c C-c My source file will auto-regenerate (global-auto-revert-mode 1) Now (at some relatively small time after), I have the line number (on both linum/nlinum) flashing at a particular line. I also have a "|" character separating the line number and the source line. Eg, line 777 =======EXAMPLE======= 777 | return 0; ; at some intermittent time after: return 0; ; at some intermittent time after: 777 | return 0; ; at some intermittent time after: return 0; =======END EXAMPLE=== BUT, it is not tied to a particular line number, as I move down/up the buffer with C-v/M-v the line number in the same place as before will now start to flicker. It seems hard to reproduce, and it was happening before I introduced the "|" character. But if someone, at some points, can turn on linum mode and make a checkin with VC mode.. perhaps it is (global-auto-revert-mode 1) that causes the issue. Either way it is a bug imo. Yes, right now, am unfortunately very very busy, so I can't take care of it in a decent way and that is why I prefer not to send any bug report at all, maybe in some weeks if this problem continues. But maybe it does not since I upgraded to 24.4 >> so I prefer to install 11.88 from source. The cause doesn't need to be exactly above that line because make performs tasks in parallel [1]. Make just cannot stop all running tasks when the first error is found, so it'll tell you if errors have happened in any task as a summary. Somewhere above, there's a line like file.el:281:1:Error: bla bla bla and that's the real error. Bye, Tassilo [1] You can tell make not to perform tasks in parallel using "MAKEOPTS=-j1 make", and then the make real error and the make "you have an error" message are next to each other.
