Didn't make a difference, unfortunately.

	 redisplay_preserve_echo_area (2);

does the trick...  That function seems to be called from everywhere --
perhaps that's the one to use:

   This is useful in situations where you need to redisplay but no
   user action has occurred, making it inappropriate for the message
   area to be cleared.
