To close this chapter: this issue became a nightmare for me/Open MPI.  After trying a lot of different things and experiencing a lot of pain, we have stopped embedding libltdl in Open MPI on our git master, which will eventually translate into the Open MPI v1.9.0 release someday (see https://github.com/open-mpi/ompi/issues/311 and https://github.com/open-mpi/ompi/pull/410 if you care for the gory details).
