It's kind of like xterm but instead of running under X11 it uses
directly the framebuffer device.  So it is similar to Linux's builtin
terminal emulator (it uses up the whole screen, there's no GUI layer of
any kind), but it's a user program.

Try `aptitude install fbterm' and then run `fbterm' from your console
command line.
