Assuming you are talking about linux -- parted uses the logical sector size returned by the kernel, which gets it from the drive. We don't set to 512 arbitrarily. So if there is an actual problem it should be reported against the kernel. -- Brian C. Every tool that I am aware of uses it. As for not aligning parted defaults to 1MiB so unless you are forcing it to a specific sector you aren't going to see an issue. -- Brian C. Incorrect: the logical sector size is what the drive uses to address sectors, and therefore, how all software, including partitioning tools addresses the drive. The physical sector size is only provided as a hint about the internal structure of the disk because it can have performance implications. Partitioning tools use this information to pick the optimal alignment. If you run parted -a min, it will take care to align partitions to a 4k boundary, aka a multiple of 8 logical sectors. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.17 (MingW32) iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJUWnrZAAoJEI5FoCIzSKrwIyoH/izigrpVziWEeCfvPy6Wp9P1 FJ9HF4Lp4m1/szSVYYi7TvoUolmOUqMdt14HC179GNI7hFw0ktBTx5E4M+2WDtCO 6ThtLbqugfNQbZETb7nISOEKwMqf+k1s35fvHNB1ZggwOdNHBvS6JsDRvjDD6+gB WkkACB3ZD94WfRlMmx6ML4WGyY8NxK4c2zXQvFXIb8bd9bsUYKjNe7NE4hSX0Cez g5hbfjqKyrcNxPiq0J7qHY01JHTgeFJ8eGr+x0WMNXeVADrCKc/TWK+BuH4F2/sR TBSvYRDZP0DNxIXE6542Ee+d7Ed7SKf1INI041SxkYh64cKLd0/g+sh4+IRBPVY= =4nVE -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From unknown Fri Jun 20 07:16:27 2025 Received: (at fakecontrol) by fakecontrolmessage; To: internal_control@debbugs.gnu.org From: Debbugs Internal Request Subject: Internal Control Message-Id: bug archived.
