I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a big deal, tho we'd still have to accept
the old syntax for a while.

FWIW, I've been using systematically /<method>:<host>: for many years
now, and not to avoid conflicts but because I found it easier not to
have to worry about which method I'd get with /<host>:.
