Thanks, but I need a reproducible test case to debug this.

It seems to abort while displaying the mode line, so perhaps you have
some special setup of the mode line which triggers the bug.

Actually, I've just spotted and fixed a thinko in bidi.c, so please
try the latest trunk. If the problem still persists, please tell what
is your mode-line-format at the moment of the assertion violation.

Thanks.

Built with your fix. Still experiencing crashes.

mode-line-format is set to the following:

OK, just setting mode-line-format ti this doesn't cause a crash. So
I'd need to know what you did before the crash, the major mode, etc.

It is best to have a reproducible recipe starting with "emacs -Q".

Thanks.

I haven't able to reproduce with "emacs -Q" yet. But I with my init file I am
able to do reproduce easily.

I kept gdb session running. would that be helpful to query anything?

Let's try. Please post the latest backtrace again, so I have a
starting point that is identical to yours.

Thanks. Please show the output from these GDB commands:

 (gdb) source /path/to/src/.gdbinit
 (gdb) frame 5
 (gdb) p bidi_it->string
 (gdb) p bidi_it->string.lstring
 (gdb) xtype
 (gdb) xstring

where "/path/to/src" is the place where you have the Emacs C sources.

This string comes from column-number-mode. But if I invoke
column-number-mode, I still cannot reproduce the problem, so there's
something else at work here. Can you describe what you do to
reproduce the crash?

Also, please show what the following commands produce:

 (gdb) frame 3
 (gdb) p bidi_it->charpos
 (gdb) p bidi_it->next_for_neutral
 (gdb) p bidi_it->prev_for_neutral
 (gdb) p bidi_it->bracket_pairing_pos
 (gdb) p bidi_it->bracket_enclosed_type

 (gdb) p bidi_cache_start

Thanks.

Crashes on different tasks. Using magit, some times C-x C-f. But one reliable
way was, selecting a url in a buffer with M-x ffap and RET.

Turns out, I don't even know how to run those commands and get the output from
gnome-terminal. With the execution of first command above, bidi.c file came
out in a little box on the top of gnome-terminal which is hindering me to copy
and paste.

Anyway, I tried "M-x gud-gdb" first time ever and got this, let me know I made
a mistake in executing listed commands.

So, if you start Emacs, visit a file with URLs, then "M-x ffap RET",
you get a crash, just like that? Or do you need Emacs to run for some
time before it crashes with ffap?

This means your mode line has some non-trivial setup, and it is most
probably that setup which triggers the problem. Can you please tell
which modes of those you invoke affect the mode line? I want to be
able to reproduce this problem on my system, because otherwise I don't
see how I can solve this just by asking you to look around in the
crashed session.

Thanks.

Yes. Simply like that.

Yes I just noticed that, the file has be elisp-mode and also in some
particular directory (el-get repository, may some thing to do its dir-locals,
don't really know anything).

One thing I can do is giving shell access to you with active gdb session
running (via GNU screen). If its okay for you, I will write a private mail.

Thanks.,

Please do. But I also need a way to re-run Emacs again on that
machine, and I need a reproducible recipe (on that machine) in order
to see how this bug develops.

Thanks.

This was the final message in this bug report.

Was there any further progress made? It's four years ago now, so it
seems unlikely that more could be done at this point if it didn't happen
back then.

My records indicate that this bug was fixed by commit b6a7474.
Yagnesh told me that change fixed the crashes, and I asked him
(off-list) to close the bug report, but that never happened.

So I'm closing this bug now. Thanks.
