Well, my newsrc happened to have an archive source already defined with
the "~/Mail/archive" directory, so it was overriding my
message-directory setting. Thus I had to delete this variable from
newsrc and everything worked as expected after that. You can close this
ticket but a cautionary word in the documentation would prevent a
nightmarishly debug session.
