c-h v user-uid shows this variable is no longer set. This problem didn't
exist with a the git version from 2 weeks ago.

You tell me, your the expert. This line in my config used to work and all
of the sudden it doesn't work anymore.

I can't find any Emacs version where

emacs -Q

reports `C-h v user-uid' as a defined variable.

If you can, please tell me.

All the uses I see of this idiom treat it as a function.  E.g.,

heh, that's funny. That's how I originally used it. Then discovered it was
a variable and changed the code and about a month later the variable is
dropped and the function with the same name is still there. I'm getting
dizzy.
