I just made a typo:

  (setq mail-user-agent 'no-such-user-agent)

If I call compose-mail, I receive the following error message:

compose-mail: Symbol's function definition is void: nil

Granted, it's a user error, but the error message could be more helpful.

I've now made the error message more explicit in Emacs 27.1.
