files.el auto-mode-alist has an entry

     ("/X11.+app-defaults/" . conf-xdefaults-mode)

It could be good if it also matched Foo.ad files, like

     ("/X11.+app-defaults/\\|\\.ad\\'" . conf-xdefaults-mode)

"Foo.ad" is the name of an app-defaults file in a source code
distribution.  It's renamed to just "Foo" when installed to
/etc/X11/app-defaults/.

(For comparison i can be seen generic-x.el `x-resource-generic-mode' has
.ad treated this way.)
