There was another bug, that made nearly all tests fail when
run under valgrind or with ASAN-enabled binaries.
Here's the patch:

Thanks for catching that.  I should have noticed it, since I squashed 
nearly the same bug before 2.19 came out.  It was reintroduced in a 
post-2.19 patch.
