Just to clarify, this is hung in the sense that Esc Esc Esc and C-g have
no effect and Gnome is popping up dialogues saying that the program is
not responding.

Also, I remembered how to get gdb to recognise the xbacktrace command,
so, for whatever it's worth, here is the output:
