I (and others) have been taking advantage of it for a long time. > The doc string of describe-font clearly says that the font must be one > which Emacs already loaded, so completing on all the _installed_ fonts > is definitely not TRT. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with that: completing against the installed fonts is fine by me. My reply to Lars was to make the point that this is about choosing a font, not choosing a fontset - completion should be against font names. [Note: Things are a lot different if you can complete against parts of the font name, and especially if you can do so progressively, to narrow down the matching candidates. If all you have is a single pattern-match attempt then the completion behavior is much less helpful/interesting.] From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sat Nov 02 12:23:08 2019 Received: (at 16815) by debbugs.gnu.org; 2 Nov 2019 16:23:08 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:32964 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1iQwBA-0004IP-14 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 02 Nov 2019 12:23:08 -0400 Received: from quimby.gnus.org ([80.91.231.51]:57354) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1iQwB8-0004II-TG for 16815@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 02 Nov 2019 12:23:07 -0400 Received: from cm-84.212.202.86.getinternet.no ([84.212.202.86] helo=marnie) by quimby.gnus.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.2:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.89) (envelope-from ) id 1iQwB4-0004Lv-7p; Sat, 02 Nov 2019 17:23:04 +0100 From: Lars Ingebrigtsen To: Eli Zaretskii Subject: Re: bug#16815: 24.3.50; Provide completion for `describe-font' (enhancement request) References: <81893506-7c6d-4c9c-8adf-033481209335@default> <8760v0z5bh.fsf@gnus.org> <640c1da6-43a2-4c50-b50f-675f0b316b8b@default> <831t5ow76o.fsf@gnu.org> Date: Sat, 02 Nov 2019 17:23:01 +0100 In-Reply-To: <831t5ow76o.fsf@gnu.org> (Eli Zaretskii's message of "Fri, 29 Apr 2016 22:23:11 +0300") Message-ID: <87d0eadz8a.fsf@gnus.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/27.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "quimby.gnus.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam. I'm not sure I understand the objection here. The form suggested by Drew just gets a list of font names -- it doesn't load anything, so it should be harmless? And the doc string of describe-font seems to be wrong. You can ask it to describe a font that's not loaded.
