Ah, sorry, I thought it was Debian-specific.  I've reopened grep bug 
16586 <http://bugs.gnu.org/16586>, and have forwarded it to Philip 
Hazel, who currently has the PCRE bug assigned, according to 
<http://bugs.exim.org/1468>.
