I then had to restart Emacs, and I don't recall what triggered it.

(I'm going through old bug reports that have unfortunately gotten no
responses yet.)

This was reported five years ago and not handled at the time, so I
think it's unlikely that there'll be any progress here, and I'm closing
this bug report.
