Recipe:
./emacs -Q --batch --eval '(setq gnus-select-method (quote (nntp "news.gmane.org")))' --eval '(gnus)'

Result:

Additionnaly, it took me some time to figure out how to obtain a
backtrace, but it worked by evaluting these from -Q:
