For what it's worth, I stand by what I wrote in 
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=193170 in 2007 and 
still don't see any reason for -i and -p to exist. They may have made 
sense on some proprietary architectures in the distant path, but are 
irrelevant on contemporary systems.
