Hi,
When I try to open a pdf file by nl, It changes the output characters.

I think what's happening here is that nl is just outputting the
_binary_ pdf file to the terminal. You would first need to convert
the pdf file to actual text before processing with nl.
Something like:

pdftotext file.pdf - | nl
