Sounds like commit http://git.sv.gnu.org/cgit/coreutils.git/commit/?id=448718c1 between v8.14..v8.15. NEWS entry: + ls's -k option no longer affects how ls -l outputs file sizes. + It now affects only the per-directory block counts written by -l, + and the sizes written by -s. This is for compatibility with BSD + and with POSIX 2008. Because -k is no longer equivalent to + --block-size=1KiB, a new long option --kibibyte stands for -k. + [bug introduced in coreutils-4.5.4] Have a nice day, Berny From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Sep 08 13:10:42 2013 Received: (at 15308) by debbugs.gnu.org; 8 Sep 2013 17:10:42 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:49166 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from ) id 1VIiVV-0003ws-OT for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 08 Sep 2013 13:10:42 -0400 Received: from mail-ob0-f172.google.com ([209.85.214.172]:55639) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from ) id 1VIiVS-0003wc-VR for 15308@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 08 Sep 2013 13:10:40 -0400 Received: by mail-ob0-f172.google.com with SMTP id er7so5151069obc.17 for <15308@debbugs.gnu.org>; Sun, 08 Sep 2013 10:10:33 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject :references:in-reply-to:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=cgVTfaymk7zOhgasxQejy7VDe8agAY25RoM8qDyf1as=; b=XvoPfheZuoHWn24ed69fKEKt1c8mYY7ZCtc7m767BNtBkH3rTxmCVzzRzvyPIBQdzj RIoqynLHTcZwQi+f15M6WHvXtVDyaAt/undpmedqFCGmt3Wajsvy65lAWavKRP3ezvOA BygMy9K2XRe6nrtXhEEfqeo5oaSedq/UIGmWHCQioQZQhPmxOt2WMZ9nT9aC0ug0P5Q+ gqeOLLUatPpFhYUD9XpNUiWJkfZZ8JulYb+wiXUwoo7QpIS9ucMvx9+pVC9UJjv1/vGm CENzeSKwdroXMOZnXRjjSzk6wMX1hzE5w+ae5uAaAbbebYJtiFXjBCAtjSpRcWpa5vBO r9Uw== X-Received: by 10.182.143.5 with SMTP id sa5mr8685103obb.80.1378660233251; Sun, 08 Sep 2013 10:10:33 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [192.168.0.75] (cpe-72-178-123-130.satx.res.rr.com. Is 'ls -lk' valid or not? If not, I think the man page needs to be clarified: -k, --kibibytes use 1024-byte blocks From the above, I don't know what 'per-directory block counts' means. 'ls -lks file' produces bytes, so the above is not correct for that either. -- Bruce From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Sep 08 14:33:08 2013 Received: (at 15308) by debbugs.gnu.org; 8 Sep 2013 18:33:08 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:49225 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from ) id 1VIjnH-0005wo-MD for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 08 Sep 2013 14:33:08 -0400 Received: from smtp.cs.ucla.edu ([131.179.128.62]:54407) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from ) id 1VIjnF-0005wH-Kp for 15308@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 08 Sep 2013 14:33:06 -0400 Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by smtp.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C5DE39E8105; Sun, 8 Sep 2013 11:32:59 -0700 (PDT) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at smtp.cs.ucla.edu Received: from smtp.cs.ucla.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (smtp.cs.ucla.edu [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 2yWCt-391THz; Sun, 8 Sep 2013 11:32:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [192.168.1.9] (pool-71-108-49-126.lsanca.fios.verizon.net [71.108.49.126]) by smtp.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 3BB7439E80F8; Sun, 8 Sep 2013 11:32:59 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <522CC2DA.6010605@cs.ucla.edu> Date: Sun, 08 Sep 2013 11:32:58 -0700 From: Paul Eggert Organization: UCLA Computer Science Department User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:17.0) Gecko/20130803 Thunderbird/17.0.8 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Bruce Dubbs Subject: Re: bug#15308: ls -lk reports bytes, not kibytes References: <522CA28D.2030403@gmail.com> <522CAA90.9010104@bernhard-voelker.de> <522CAF86.3050509@gmail.com> In-Reply-To: <522CAF86.3050509@gmail.com> X-Enigmail-Version: 1.5.2 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Score: -3.0 (---) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 15308 Cc: 15308@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.15 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -3.0 (---) Bruce Dubbs wrote: > I'm not sure what you are saying.
