However, sometime, I just want to alter a config file from the terminal. In this case I type emacs -nw conf_file.conf Very often I know that the line I want to go to is fairly low so before emacs has finished to load I'm already pressing C-n waiting for the display to show line and point. I guess a lot of user do the same and often don't wait for the display to finish before typing what they want. In this particular case, emacs would insert strange chars at point, for example : 1;1704;0c You won't be warned, and it will be saved along with your real modifications, which is embarassing. To reproduce, open any multiline file from the terminal, for example .bash_history, with 'emacs -nw' and immediatly maintain C-n until the display come up entirely. You should find at point the strange chars. Tested with emacs23cvs with -Q on Gnu/Linux with xterm and gnome-terminal. -- Paul From rgm@gnu.org Thu Dec 4 14:05:47 2008 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.2.3-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 (2007-08-08) on rzlab.ucr.edu X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-8.8 required=4.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_00,MISSING_SUBJECT, NOSUBJECT,RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED,X_DEBBUGS_NO_ACK autolearn=ham version=3.2.3-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 Received: (at control) by emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com; 4 Dec 2008 22:05:47 +0000 Received: from fencepost.gnu.org (fencepost.gnu.org [140.186.70.10]) by rzlab.ucr.edu (8.13.8/8.13.8/Debian-3) with ESMTP id mB4M5i0g011216 for ; Thu, 4 Dec 2008 14:05:45 -0800 Received: from rgm by fencepost.gnu.org with local (Exim 4.67) (envelope-from ) id 1L8MJv-0003BF-Ap; Thu, 04 Dec 2008 17:05:15 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <18744.21531.254125.18299@fencepost.gnu.org> Date: Thu, 4 Dec 2008 17:05:15 -0500 From: Glenn Morris To: control X-Attribution: GM X-Mailer: VM (www.wonderworks.com/vm), GNU Emacs (www.gnu.org/software/emacs) X-Hue: black X-Ran: HGxM+Zdb8z67E~6lMQ9hO_f1=d=; Thu, 4 Dec 2008 14:39:53 -0800 Received: by ey-out-2122.google.com with SMTP id 4so2084936eyf.13 for ; Thu, 04 Dec 2008 14:39:50 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to :subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding :content-disposition; bh=ToQuxjnwvuu5WC4UatBdwjQf1eJhvs4VPJM3tDpchZY=; b=NL7gzDFlT/6/1tJ6yvZN7esPzRi1KLBQFnwW5E1WCl4ZygjCmI2EznMs9XFFD3OaI1 q3eYSFTOz4fjKigdGG9mcOItvURmoE4gNeTNV2ybJqmOciLk+Idi9zDj6avPXrR0/NG8 uzNpYD2qPN4xY/fQzTtR/sZ4kj2zMTGo0R6f0= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type :content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=X0grsPQuEvCcdkQmsT+gJT4zYV7pd4D/Ojkrl6ZiTuCf0xSZLfKWT3UYDQIK4A8sNj KxK3hGzi7/DHzxqS9iLXEgWtavzoEIfesm8YsyKrwhSAtBJBYzOxt2ryVHJVS/RH5nHt tcHMkGKtU8OKsR4QdTmpxorAAF+xBQTfhdSPE= Received: by 10.210.119.16 with SMTP id r16mr11559287ebc.36.1228430390929; Thu, 04 Dec 2008 14:39:50 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.210.23.12 with HTTP; Thu, 4 Dec 2008 14:39:50 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Thu, 4 Dec 2008 23:39:50 +0100 From: "Juanma Barranquero" To: control@debbugs.gnu.org Subject: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline merge 1494 1495 quit From cyd@stupidchicken.com Fri Dec 5 19:57:12 2008 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.2.3-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 (2007-08-08) on rzlab.ucr.edu X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-4.0 required=4.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_00 autolearn=ham version=3.2.3-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 Received: (at 1494-done) by emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com; 6 Dec 2008 03:57:12 +0000 Received: from cyd.mit.edu (CYD.MIT.EDU [18.115.2.24]) by rzlab.ucr.edu (8.13.8/8.13.8/Debian-3) with ESMTP id mB63v9LV025545 for <1494-done@emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com>; Fri, 5 Dec 2008 19:57:10 -0800 Received: by cyd.mit.edu (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 3CE4557E195; Fri, 5 Dec 2008 22:57:12 -0500 (EST) From: Chong Yidong To: 1494-done@debbugs.gnu.org Subject: Re: emacs -nw inserts unwanted chars if user is impatient Date: Fri, 05 Dec 2008 22:57:12 -0500 Message-ID: <87ljuuot0n.fsf@cyd.mit.edu> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I don't see any other way to handle this, so I've checked in the fix involving discarding pending input before reading the reply to the terminal attributes query.
