With simple test file test.el having:

emacs -Q --eval "(setq-default prog-prettify-symbols nil)" test.el    ; correct
emacs -Q --eval "(setq-default prog-prettify-symbols t)" test.el  ; incorrect
[correct.png (image/png, attachment)]
[incorrect.png (image/png, attachment)]
