Just to add some co= ntext: this is effectively a follow-up to bug #11535 by a new maintainer.

[ I really wish people could just use `elpa' as the main repository so we don't have to constantly deal with such synchronization. ] > What steps do I need to take to accomplish this? I already sent you the forms to get your copyright paperwork done. Note that any other new contributor (since the last sync) will also need to sign that paperwork. Once this is done, I can give you write access to the `elpa' branch (which you can update via "bzr merge" if you have the bzr-git plugin installed, tho you'll need to merge from a local branch, because of some apparent bzr-git bug). The version on GNU ELPA was last updated in 2013. On the other hand, the GitHub repository has seen updates as late as March 2017. Should the GNU ELPA package really be kept around if it is unmaintained and not recommended by the author? What's the way forward here? I guess that means that someone has to check the copyrights of all committers since our version and upstream diverged, make sure that all of them has the assignment, and if all checks out, to add it to ELPA. Is that correct? Perhaps a new wishlist bug report would be better to track that work? Is that correct? I submitted a bug report, and this is the reply from the current maintainers: "I don't have GNU elpa commit permission and cannot update it. Please use MELPA version." https://github.com/defunkt/coffee-mode/issues/372 I'm not sure what to do about it. They don't sound interested to do all of the above work, and I don't know if it's worth trying to push it. It seems like an uphill battle. Perhaps we should just note this down as a package to include in NonGNU ELPA? I don't know much about CoffeeScript and web development in general, but I was searching online and found this assessment: In summary, CoffeeScript began as a fantastic idea (making it easier to write JavaScript code); ultimately, however, it didn=E2=80=99t stand= the test of time and was pushed out by JavaScript. Currently, hardly anyone remembers it. Most new people in the front-end environment don=E2=80=99t even know such a language existed. Instead of being inclu= ded in lists of the most popular new programming languages, it takes top spots on the lists of the worst languages =E2=80=8B=E2=80=8Bto learn. https://betterprogramming.pub/how-coffeescript-got-forgotten-8123282259= 87 If the above is any indication, I would say we have better things to focus on and move it to NonGNU ELPA. But that's me. I am not sure if this is the case, or if it was pushed out by another high-level JavaScript language, Microsoft's TypeScript. They appear to have shared a common trajectory to their respective Electron editors (CoffeeScript was used to write the now stagnating Atom, TypeScript was used to write the currently popular VSCode). On that topic, I have contacted the typescript-mode maintainers a while back and they have agreed to distribute their package on NonGNU ELPA. --=20 Philip Kaludercic From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sat Oct 23 04:30:09 2021 Received: (at 14204) by debbugs.gnu.org; 23 Oct 2021 08:30:09 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:34314 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1meCPp-0008FO-Ju for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 23 Oct 2021 04:30:09 -0400 Received: from mail-pg1-f172.google.com ([209.85.215.172]:37625) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1meCPo-0008E8-9d for 14204@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 23 Oct 2021 04:30:08 -0400 Received: by mail-pg1-f172.google.com with SMTP id s136so5567248pgs.4 for <14204@debbugs.gnu.org>; Sat, 23 Oct 2021 01:30:08 -0700 (PDT) X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20210112; h=x-gm-message-state:from:in-reply-to:references:mime-version:date :message-id:subject:to:cc; bh=ydDouEgjXJIbRmmasfM7mra/9cgBXOEl4VUNM41GOjM=; b=eJKrjSj6vlkjUGYoYlJx0od2EneoFkmFQCs/JN36a72DF2DmIWKJQIB4q99ceqeUrI 7UVF8IPNryuwpsnGuPhZr572ebxEY+MNrikoLScR4ZfyOKMXky6Su0nrKaKHvrZCnSIc 3jMvwp8PC+o82ZRI3tCAJ9USRJmSMdigc4yHeKdvwLYV6Hpe98oIZoLZSIwWgiBCxqEd AJ0vRGYAzkkHXXLi86mF4q0SLRdTnj5nJNFipvDb8soZp9EjQjukArIeOmZEi20ZKxZ4 a3aK/Yl+NfDG80BzxEDLZQ5VT2phzJ5scl9/9HpVsG3ZsLIcVxcelSU4PAxEL/B+76cM zgOw== X-Gm-Message-State: AOAM530r3JRo3EWm7YxQNY/2FNaV5gegu2J83M1+EZSnJdQeCdQqLvBA 2WFCiY1rvP6Api2VWx4WShgL9bv1lrJAdWcSVV0= X-Google-Smtp-Source: ABdhPJzTKdScX+W8gTdIhln716Q4GQcdPl/2Mu+MVTklvH/TMT5Gp3KDKF22Bndz/BCYF99GBkFkWxnqA+WcnEewGHw= X-Received: by 2002:a63:370c:: with SMTP id e12mr3670103pga.359.1634977802254; Sat, 23 Oct 2021 01:30:02 -0700 (PDT) Received: from 753933720722 named unknown by gmailapi.google.com with HTTPREST; Sat, 23 Oct 2021 01:30:01 -0700 From: Stefan Kangas In-Reply-To: <87ee8c9n2m.fsf@posteo.net> References: <87lf2kx38h.fsf@posteo.net> <87ee8c9n2m.fsf@posteo.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Date: Sat, 23 Oct 2021 01:30:01 -0700 Message-ID: Subject: Re: bug#14204: [ELPA] Update coffe-mode.el to latest version To: Philip Kaludercic Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Spam-Score: 0.5 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 14204 Cc: Justine Tunney , Dmitry Gutov , 14204@debbugs.gnu.org, Stefan Monnier , Reuben Thomas X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.5 (/) Philip Kaludercic writes: > I am not sure if this is the case, or if it was pushed out by another > high-level JavaScript language, Microsoft's TypeScript. I arrive at the same conclusion: it's better to move coffee-mode.el to NonGNU ELPA, which saves us from having to chase down copyright assignments. We can then use our time for more important things, such as chasing down assignments for higher priority packages. WDYT?
