Try edubug-defun in the *scratch* buffer on a sexp like this:

(setq foo 'bar)

Even if it finished, it keeps the buffer remaining read-only.

In GNU Emacs 24.3.50.1 (i686-pc-cygwin, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
 of 2013-04-05 on localhost
Bzr revision: 112223 yamaoka <at> jpl.org-20130404221525-zxuxjlwb3xqo7ra3
Windowing system distributor `The Cygwin/X Project', version 11.0.11303000
Configured using:
 `configure --verbose --with-x-toolkit=lucid --without-imagemagick
 --without-dbus --without-gconf --without-gsettings'
