For what it's worth, I've now confirmed that the crash
also affects Aquamacs 2.4 (in this case when I was visiting
a file via Ctrl-x Ctrl-f).

On http://people.ds.cam.ac.uk/ssb22/setup/emacs.html I
recommend Emacs 22 for now.
