In (info "(elisp) Basic Major Modes"):

     Special mode sets the buffer to read-only.  Its keymap defines
     several common bindings, including `q' for `quit-window', `z' for
     `kill-this-buffer', and `g' for `revert-buffer' (*note
     Reverting::).

But the `z' key no longer has a binding in most special modes in Emacs
24.3.
