from the elisp manual:
-- Function: random &optional limit
[...]
If LIMIT is a string, it means to choose a new seed based on the
string's contents.
That's what it does for me, I think. However, the docstring of `random'
does not mention string values. Due to the docstring, strings would be
ignored.
