Subject: Series of 'Warning - invalid active: ...' during retrieving mail
Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2012 23:44:16 +0100

After upgrading to emacs 24 on Debian (probably gnus upgraded too) I
get:

Warning - invalid active: <number> <subject>

for each (I think) mail in my opened earlier gnus summary buffer.

In more details: If I start gnus I can retrieve mails without problems
and warnings using 'g' (gnus-group-get-new-news). If I enter some group
using <RET> (gnus-group-select-group) and leave it using 'q'
(gnus-summary-exit) then next news retrieval will produce mentioned
earlier warnings. News are retrieved after those warnings and later
attempts work without problems until I enter some group summary and
leave it.

I hope this is enough to reproduce the problem.

Tomasz Gajewski

There should be no active data read when you enter a summary buffer, so
I don't quite understand that error message.

What does it say, exactly? Go to the *Messages* buffer and copy the
message from there.

I haven't seen that those warnings contain more text after the
subject. Now I see that there is much more.

Number of those warnings depends on visited summary buffer. I can see
that some warnings are about messages I don't have anymore (I've
probably deleted them some time ago).

Below first part and last part of warnings generated for some
group.

If you need some additional info just send me instructions how to get
it.

This probably means that you're reading an active file somewhere that
contains .nov overview data, somehow. I think something in your setup
is b0rken, but it's difficult to say what.

Do you have any ideas what I should check?

I have observed that it happens only if I open the summary buffer and
leave it without doing anything. If I reply to some mail or delete some
mail than after leaving buffer retrieving mail works without those
warnings. Does it help somehow?

Try grepping all files you have for the offending .nov data, perhaps?

Huh. That's even odder... Perhaps the issue isn't a wrong data file
somewhere, but something not clearing a buffer before parsing? But if
so, it's odd that other users aren't seeing this.

Try applying this patch to gnus-start, recompile, and post the
backtrace. That may give us an inkling of what's going on, perhaps.

What does it mean 'offending .nov data'? Should I grep for '.nov'? I
don't know what it is.

I've removed bytecode because I got warnings about zero values in mail.

Strangely on the stack there is a call to 'gnus-active-to-gnus-format'
where in parameters there are two grups mentioned but not the one I
opened and not the one for which mails I get warnings. What do you think
about it?

Oh, it's reading the active data from the nnnil method that fails. That
should be, like, impossible.

Do you have an old version of nnnil.el in your load path shadowing the
version in Emacs 24? What does `M-x list-load-path-shadows' say?

You are right.

/usr/share/emacs24/site-lisp/gnus-bonus-el/nnnil hides /usr/share/emacs/24.1/lisp/gnus/nnnil

It is a problem with ubuntu packaging I think. gnus-bonus-el provides
nnnil but for emacs24 probably shouldn't. I removed this package and it
fixed the issue.

It seems it is a known problem for a long time:

http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.gnus.general/69083

and even

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=609698

but it seems that there is no fix yet.

I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Should I close the bug somehow or you will do this?

Tomasz Gajewski
