So, this is definitely new behavior, I checked the emacs-24 build, and 
it now also exhibits the problem (it didn't previously), so this stuff 
is not caused by the 2-months-old commit of yours.

Maybe it's a sign of my system slowly falling apart. I'm going to test 
this on a different virtual machine.
