Unfortunately it seems not:

$ gpg --output sym.gpg --symmetric < /dev/null
$ file sym.gpg
sym.gpg: DOS executable (COM)

$ gpg --output pub.gpg -r ueno <at> unixuser.org --encrypt < /dev/null
$ file pub.gpg
pub.gpg: data

$ file ~/.gnupg/pubring.gpg
/home/ueno/.gnupg/pubring.gpg: GPG key public ring
