Where would you put a calendar in a configuration like this:

|        |        |
|        |        |
|        |        |
 -----------------

Regardless of which window is selected, IMO the location would be

 -----------------
|        |        |
|        |        |
|        |--------|
|        | here.  |
 -----------------
