If I erase the customization for savehist-mode in normal Emacs, and
then re-customize it, using M-x customize-variable savehist-mode RET,
and toggle to on, and then save it, then the line in my custom.el is:

 '(savehist-mode t nil (savehist))

as I originally posted.
