Advantages: * This would add consistency to the Isearch visual feedback. * The search string would be shown in a fixed position in the message (now the search string jumps right and left when the I-search flags are added/removed in the prompt text. This makes difficult to concentrate on the search string). Thanks Juri. I've tried your patch and I think that is a step forward. However, on second thought, I think that the "failing" message is actually unnecessary. Looking at the echo area, it is obvious whether the current search is failing or not (if it's failing, the unmatched text will be on a different face). Regarding the "search states" (wrapped, overwrapped, ...), I see that we disagree :). These states are currently inserted at the left side of the search string, and I definitely would prefer to have them at the right side, for the reason exposed in a previous post: avoid the horizontal movement of the search string, which makes harder to concentrate on the search string. This is an important factor, IMO. In the left part of the search string, I would put only the info that does _not_ depend on the state of the search, i.e., the "I-search" text and (when necessary) the type of search (word and/or regexp). All other messages (i.e. those that _do_ depend on the state of the search) would go to the right side of the search string (as "[flag1 flag2 ...]"), for the reason already explained. Just my opinion... Ok, that's true. Now I ask you: why would be so problematic to have (in some cases) such text to the right of the search string? The text of these messages could use the same face as the prompt text (the "I-search: "), to make perfectly clear what is the search string (in default face) and what is the "search status feedback". -- Dani Moncayo From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Wed Aug 01 19:36:37 2012 Received: (at 12078) by debbugs.gnu.org; 1 Aug 2012 23:36:37 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:55549 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1SwiSz-0008QY-32 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 01 Aug 2012 19:36:37 -0400 Received: from pruche.dit.umontreal.ca ([132.204.246.22]:44522) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1SwiSx-0008QR-5K for 12078@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 01 Aug 2012 19:36:35 -0400 Received: from fmsmemgm.homelinux.net (lechon.iro.umontreal.ca [132.204.27.242]) by pruche.dit.umontreal.ca (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id q71NT6Pc017275; Wed, 1 Aug 2012 19:29:06 -0400 Received: by fmsmemgm.homelinux.net (Postfix, from userid 20848) id 60CAAAE2A6; Wed, 1 Aug 2012 19:29:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Stefan Monnier To: Dani Moncayo Subject: Re: bug#12078: 24.1; Improve the I-search prompt Message-ID: References: <87txwr2ylo.fsf@mail.jurta.org> <87d33esat8.fsf@mail.jurta.org> Date: Wed, 01 Aug 2012 19:29:05 -0400 In-Reply-To: (Dani Moncayo's message of "Tue, 31 Jul 2012 01:50:29 +0200") User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/24.1.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-NAI-Spam-Flag: NO X-NAI-Spam-Threshold: 5 X-NAI-Spam-Score: 0 X-NAI-Spam-Rules: 1 Rules triggered RV4297=0 X-NAI-Spam-Version: 2.2.0.9309 : core <4297> : streams <793290> : uri <1181333> X-Spam-Score: -3.5 (---) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 12078 Cc: Juri Linkov , 12078@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.13 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -3.5 (---) > Now I ask you: why would be so problematic to have (in some cases) > such text to the right of the search string?
