I think there’s no simpler answer, so no conclusion.  We’d have to
experiment with the various possibilities (‘define-inlinable’ for
‘format’, a ‘format*’ macro, or compiler support).

Of course, you’re welcome to give it a go and let guile-devel know!  :-)
