(I'm going through old bug reports that unfortunately have gotten no
responses yet.)

Those image links are dead by now (no surprise there), but I'm unable to
reproduce the error with doc-view -- white backgrounds show up in Emacs
as white backgrounds.

Are you still seeing this problem in modern Emacs versions?
