The command "date --date=3D'yesterday' +%Y-%m-%d" launched this morning between 0:00 am and 0:59 am gives the wrong result: root@serveur:> date --date=3D'today' +%Y-%m-%d; date --date=3D'yesterday' +%Y-%m-%d 2012-03-26 2012-03-24 This is caused by the system clock changes which happened last night. If we run the command with full date display format, we can see that UTC+0100 have switch to UTC+0200: root@serveur:> date --date=3D'today'; date --date=3D'yesterday' lundi 26 mars 2012, 00:27:43 (UTC+0200) samedi 24 mars 2012, 23:27:43 (UTC+0100) Without any reference to UTC, "yesterday" means "the day before" and not "now minus 24 hours". This is caused by the system clock changes which hap= pened last night. If we run the command with full date display format, we c= an see that UTC+0100 have switch to UTC+0200:

Thanks for the report. However, this is not a bug in date, but in your expectations. 'yesterday' translates to '24 hours ago', and due to your daylight savings swap, 24 hours ago really does put you into a different date. As recommended in our FAQ, https://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/faq/#The-date-command-is-not-worki= ng-right_002e it's almost always better to base relative time computations off of noon rather than midnight (as both 11 am and 1 pm fall in the same day, even when your multiple-of-24-hours crosses a 23-hour or 25-hour day). --=20 Eric Blake eblake@redhat.com +1-919-301-3266 Libvirt virtualization library http://libvirt.org --------------enig217540C380944885189B0C75 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.12 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Public key at http://people.redhat.com/eblake/eblake.gpg Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJPcKgNAAoJEKeha0olJ0NqzPcH/0hOOQh4i0IgLs/DyDTV4w9B 7pL6Qv2cJmFddkrnA8vt0RLlQgYjE/eQihPT61KoZmWdxVIHvpvbFtXLjMiCcn0S vyn0PP7o3sfeh6oIato5Ymvpt9mw2pQooLmpPMiUceIo4XzbfPD3QYm+ygOcCOdR cq8CphQk7VznIycLvuXt0T3slzIKfZ64jcCS3xM40zziSROPs2kfsbAb/238DUKU unDR1fZ9o+BZHk0fferCsNIS/2Fc3HJBZ14FjzatmgPaxN0RvYwT+PKmLEGN/rVT Ngtwc8Nhpslif+XmVBWtpSD0nPfi0xlDDVTTDRAFllB/JxplEgwcG4WH8zuIwYg= =N8uL -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------enig217540C380944885189B0C75-- From unknown Sat Jun 21 05:20:19 2025 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: MIME-tools 5.428 (Entity 5.428) X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org From: help-debbugs@gnu.org (GNU bug Tracking System) To: Hugo =?UTF-8?Q?Gu=C3=A9rineau?= Subject: bug#11098: closed (Re: bug#11098: date --yesterday wrong result) Message-ID: References: <4F70A80D.4040304@redhat.com> X-Gnu-PR-Message: they-closed 11098 X-Gnu-PR-Package: coreutils X-Gnu-PR-Keywords: notabug Reply-To: 11098@debbugs.gnu.org Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 18:04:03 +0000 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="----------=_1332785043-21266-1" This is a multi-part message in MIME format... ------------=_1332785043-21266-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Your bug report #11098: date --yesterday wrong result which was filed against the coreutils package, has been closed. As recommended in our FAQ, https://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/faq/#The-date-command-is-not-worki= ng-right_002e it's almost always better to base relative time computations off of noon rather than midnight (as both 11 am and 1 pm fall in the same day, even when your multiple-of-24-hours crosses a 23-hour or 25-hour day). --=20 Eric Blake eblake@redhat.com +1-919-301-3266 Libvirt virtualization library http://libvirt.org --------------enig217540C380944885189B0C75 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.12 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Public key at http://people.redhat.com/eblake/eblake.gpg Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJPcKgNAAoJEKeha0olJ0NqzPcH/0hOOQh4i0IgLs/DyDTV4w9B 7pL6Qv2cJmFddkrnA8vt0RLlQgYjE/eQihPT61KoZmWdxVIHvpvbFtXLjMiCcn0S vyn0PP7o3sfeh6oIato5Ymvpt9mw2pQooLmpPMiUceIo4XzbfPD3QYm+ygOcCOdR cq8CphQk7VznIycLvuXt0T3slzIKfZ64jcCS3xM40zziSROPs2kfsbAb/238DUKU unDR1fZ9o+BZHk0fferCsNIS/2Fc3HJBZ14FjzatmgPaxN0RvYwT+PKmLEGN/rVT Ngtwc8Nhpslif+XmVBWtpSD0nPfi0xlDDVTTDRAFllB/JxplEgwcG4WH8zuIwYg= =N8uL -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------enig217540C380944885189B0C75-- ------------=_1332785043-21266-1 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Received: (at submit) by debbugs.gnu.org; 26 Mar 2012 16:42:16 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:39886 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1SCCzZ-0002kq-LR for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 12:42:16 -0400 Received: from eggs.gnu.org ([208.118.235.92]:33864) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1SC8dQ-0003cr-0M for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 08:03:06 -0400 Received: from Debian-exim by eggs.gnu.org with spam-scanned (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1SC89A-0001Nd-Kj for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 07:31:42 -0400 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.3.2 (2011-06-06) on eggs.gnu.org X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-5.5 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_00,FREEMAIL_FROM, HTML_IMAGE_ONLY_28,HTML_MESSAGE,RCVD_IN_DNSWL_HI,T_DKIM_INVALID, T_REMOTE_IMAGE autolearn=unavailable version=3.3.2 Received: from lists.gnu.org ([208.118.235.17]:38320) by eggs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1SC89A-0001NX-Eq for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 07:31:36 -0400 Received: from eggs.gnu.org ([208.118.235.92]:38998) by lists.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1SC894-0003rR-8a for bug-coreutils@gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 07:31:36 -0400 Received: from Debian-exim by eggs.gnu.org with spam-scanned (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1SC88x-0001Ku-K5 for bug-coreutils@gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 07:31:29 -0400 Received: from mail-wi0-f171.google.com ([209.85.212.171]:47155) by eggs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1SC88x-0001KK-AU for bug-coreutils@gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 07:31:23 -0400 Received: by wibhj13 with SMTP id hj13so3133182wib.12 for ; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 04:31:20 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:sender:from:date:x-google-sender-auth:message-id :subject:to:content-type; bh=kF1WjSuY5QYqUCOKgB4lgqlhGfnoTo5rYSbY5RwbTZ4=; b=bPfs7uD8me4OAPJ0fNmiV+ksiDvEP8WLLjCTZ6fhsTrAH7hw7nLPbGo8K6bI1yUKXa FDjgwGl4wH0bOZxZpdPsf8TRVo9tIS0z/6LoB7kw7TVRo3ufiW/R4O9N8xilAPiC7iWM 73S8LMp+v2C9okz1NzggJmKJ/Dk1TqR/5NuZ7IINaufIVUnCj0/gprmr/ogRpLaftXes VHCFx9OXHSAr+KTJ7hH/3s/NSzpbM9YrvGV+v42dDhSHi40anQ8BczBF/TPvLPXPXbMj vpQ5UihxPPpSaKD6ZqaGmiFbPyzoKruO/LOj5gquGcsmK6Mfaq0Uy5ZwGtjJ31GO9g7t OxXg== Received: by 10.216.135.66 with SMTP id t44mr12218827wei.8.1332761480510; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 04:31:20 -0700 (PDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.223.74.16 with HTTP; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 04:31:00 -0700 (PDT) From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Hugo_Gu=E9rineau?= Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 13:31:00 +0200 X-Google-Sender-Auth: 6TKin0QpLUI_aIXaUWfqe24VDxI Message-ID: Subject: date --yesterday wrong result To: bug-coreutils@gnu.org Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=0016e6de00249dbdf404bc23b6d3 X-detected-operating-system: by eggs.gnu.org: Genre and OS details not recognized. However, you're the second person this week, and adding to a long line of duplicate reporters in prior years, to notice that 'date' is behaving as we have documented it. https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-coreutils/2012-03/msg00102.html 'yesterday' means 'subtract 24 hours', but if you start at midnight after a 23-hour day, subtracting 24 hours really does cross 2 calendar dates.
