Why not? The manual currently has many of such explanations, e.g., in that same info node "(emacs)emacsclient Options": `-s SERVER-NAME' `--socket-name=3DSERVER-NAME' Connect to the Emacs server named SERVER-NAME. The server name is given by the variable `server-name' on the Emacs server. If this option is omitted, `emacsclient' connects to the first server it finds. The reason we unified -t and -c in the Windows' emacsclient is because the user can then invoke emacslient -(c|t) from a shortcut or .CMD file and not have to worry about the Emacs server instance being GUI or console. The user already has an Emacs server running (or the call to emacsclient will fail for other reasons, unrelated to c/t). Emitting a warning in these cases seems to me more noisy than helpful. =C2=A0 =C2=A0 Juanma From unknown Sat Aug 16 19:16:45 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#11091: 24.0.94; emacsclient -t Resent-From: Eli Zaretskii Original-Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 19:48:02 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 11091 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Stefan Monnier Cc: lekktu@gmail.com, 11091@debbugs.gnu.org, dmoncayo@gmail.com Reply-To: Eli Zaretskii Received: via spool by 11091-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B11091.1332791222943 (code B ref 11091); Mon, 26 Mar 2012 19:48:02 +0000 Received: (at 11091) by debbugs.gnu.org; 26 Mar 2012 19:47:02 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:40053 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1SCFsW-0000Ep-R5 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 15:47:02 -0400 Received: from fencepost.gnu.org ([208.118.235.10]:60547) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1SCFsG-0000EV-Lg for 11091@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 15:46:55 -0400 Received: from eliz by fencepost.gnu.org with local (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1SCFO3-0003S5-8E; Mon, 26 Mar 2012 15:15:27 -0400 Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 15:15:27 -0400 Message-Id: From: Eli Zaretskii In-reply-to: (message from Stefan Monnier on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 08:39:02 -0400) References: MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Spam-Score: -1.9 (-) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.13 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -6.9 (------) > From: Stefan Monnier > Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 08:39:02 -0400 > Cc: Juanma Barranquero , 11091@debbugs.gnu.org > > >>> I think that these limitations are not documented in the manual.  If > >>> so, could this be fixed, please? > >> I'm not sure the manual is the right place to document such > >> limitations. Allow me a few comments. On the "-c" option: > [...] Emacs can create a graphical frame even if it was started in a > text-only terminal, provided it is able to connect to a graphical > display, and provided it can create graphical frames when started > from a text-only terminal. Isn't this wording a bit awkward? "Emacs can do X, provided it is able to do Y, and provided it can do X" On the "-t" option: > Create a new Emacs frame on the current text-only terminal, instead > of using an existing Emacs frame. If Emacs can open a text-only > terminal even if it was started in another text-only terminal, or on > a graphical display, it will create a text-only frame on the current > terminal. That is, "Do X instead of Y. If Emacs can do X even if Z, it will do X.". Not much clean, IMHO. > Otherwise(2), it will create a new frame, either GUI or text-only, > on the same terminal where Emacs was started. Here the last part ("on the same terminal where...") gives the impression that the new frame will be created on a terminal, regardless of whether it is GUI or text-only. Also, in the case that the new frame is text-only, it's not clear whether the frame will be created in the current terminal one or in the server one. -- Dani Moncayo From unknown Sat Aug 16 19:16:45 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#11091: 24.0.94; emacsclient -t Resent-From: Dani Moncayo Original-Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2012 11:46:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 11091 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Eli Zaretskii Cc: lekktu@gmail.com, 11091@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 11091-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B11091.13331943194828 (code B ref 11091); Sat, 31 Mar 2012 11:46:01 +0000 Received: (at 11091) by debbugs.gnu.org; 31 Mar 2012 11:45:19 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:60187 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1SDwkA-0001Fp-Oj for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 31 Mar 2012 07:45:19 -0400 Received: from mail-ob0-f172.google.com ([209.85.214.172]:51715) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1SDwk9-0001Fh-48 for 11091@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 31 Mar 2012 07:45:17 -0400 Received: by obbta17 with SMTP id ta17so2031961obb.3 for <11091@debbugs.gnu.org>; Sat, 31 Mar 2012 04:45:12 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type; bh=9Z8EsaynSQjdT7H4jx3petrevlnYPmqMxWKmOCk+E74=; b=NU2UPevi12XENmPfxGoDcZZURAcc+mnHcljAYXxzY3wIEwgK3CZF1YLHHMwO+skR/w i0yxru3kZYQJ/UH9u01Jp5syzPuj67vLTPtAWqgo8bJ2dGdUe6BAJzGdTncN8mBXD6ub M9glZSTYQoO/3NuKGKq1DTNOaIznlxqMndiCZkw5DXW0283LLPZHgV21fi6baKoC/3e+ 2Mkhny7qPnqj7XtZ3Rikgt1ZCIkAyXi8yhBz2jhArWcJT3qhD5mSlEbtAfkrj5Zg7CMd hZpTQdC2w5cAfaTeVTokhvo5BwjcFOb/NQXyVBZjnndj89YecPmYKH6vxF1KOCv4EQTo Cm3A== MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.60.13.37 with SMTP id e5mr2293732oec.70.1333194312469; Sat, 31 Mar 2012 04:45:12 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.60.118.69 with HTTP; Sat, 31 Mar 2012 04:45:12 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: References: <83ty15jdtp.fsf@gnu.org> Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2012 13:45:12 +0200 Message-ID: From: Dani Moncayo Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 X-Spam-Score: -2.6 (--) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.13 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -2.6 (--) >> Otherwise(2), it will create a new frame, either GUI or text-only, >> on the same terminal where Emacs was started. > > Also, in the case that the new frame is text-only, it's not clear > whether the frame will be created in the current terminal one or in > the server one. I think of "terminal" as a shell program designed to interact with the system using a text-only command-oriented interface. So far I've not seen in the manual other meanings for this. So, saying that a graphical Emacs frame will be created on a terminal marks no sense to me, but I can be wrong, of course. In short: I prefer my version of the doc fix because, IMHO, it is more clean and easier to parse. But if you disagree, I'll be ok with the current one.
