diffutils seem to be going backwards and forwards on this one, eg

Paul can probably tell us the current thinking...


Anyway, what about Solaris's diff, which has neither -L nor --label?

Why not test for this option, which Emacs presumably uses only for
cosmetic effect, before using it?
