When the help window is one out of three windows on a frame and you do _not_ select it, it's quite difficult to restore the state of the frame before showing help. You would have to (1) manually switch to the help window, (2) type "q" in it, and maybe (3) switch back to the previously selected window. If, however, you _do_ select the help window, you can simply type "q" in it and get back the old state of affairs. The more problematic case occurs rather when there are only two windows and help reuses the other window. In this case the default value of `help-window-select' means you have to manually switch to that other window and type "q" there. martin From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Tue Mar 20 05:35:59 2012 Received: (at 11039) by debbugs.gnu.org; 20 Mar 2012 09:35:59 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:57740 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1S9vTz-0002HW-05 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 20 Mar 2012 05:35:59 -0400 Received: from fencepost.gnu.org ([208.118.235.10]:34676) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1S9vTw-0002HP-JJ for 11039@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 20 Mar 2012 05:35:58 -0400 Received: from [155.69.17.182] (port=41980 helo=ulysses) by fencepost.gnu.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.0:DHE_RSA_AES_128_CBC_SHA1:16) (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1S9v0K-0007ru-0H; Tue, 20 Mar 2012 05:05:20 -0400 From: Chong Yidong To: martin rudalics Subject: Re: bug#11039: 24.0.94; Window incorrectly getting selected References: <87wr6i2ezh.fsf@gnu.org> <4F662E00.5080309@gmx.at> <87ipi1gm6y.fsf@gnu.org> <4F66E6C7.7060708@gmx.at> Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2012 17:05:11 +0800 In-Reply-To: <4F66E6C7.7060708@gmx.at> (martin rudalics's message of "Mon, 19 Mar 2012 08:56:55 +0100") Message-ID: <87haxjfxrs.fsf@gnu.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/24.0.94 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Spam-Score: -6.9 (------) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 11039 Cc: 11039@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.13 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -6.9 (------) martin rudalics writes: > When the help window is one out of three windows on a frame and you do > _not_ select it, it's quite difficult to restore the state of the frame > before showing help. Help windows ought to stick closely to the default `display-buffer' behavior. I don't see why they should be treated so differently from other "display XYZ in another window" commands. In fact, the default `other' value seems like the worst of all worlds. You seem to be assuming that the user wants to dismiss the help window immediately, but I don't think that that's a justified assumption. When writing Emacs Lisp code, for instance, I like to leave one window open for the *Help* buffer, and this behavior keeps switching me out of the code buffer. At the time I wrote this there were many complaints that quitting help is messy and I tried to address that. So if you really want to change something, you might consider a solution where we don't select a help window when it got reused. Aynthing else will throw off people who get help in a new window and want to get rid of that window easily. martin From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Tue Mar 20 09:28:57 2012 Received: (at 11039) by debbugs.gnu.org; 20 Mar 2012 13:28:57 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:57945 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1S9z7Q-0008Pk-71 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 20 Mar 2012 09:28:57 -0400 Received: from mail-pz0-f44.google.com ([209.85.210.44]:49072) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1S9z7A-0008PO-E3 for 11039@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 20 Mar 2012 09:28:51 -0400 Received: by dakl33 with SMTP id l33so5249dak.3 for <11039@debbugs.gnu.org>; Tue, 20 Mar 2012 05:58:03 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=LeB9CG00LCXb+rTrvx0pm4C0HeYAmNqfkmiKymmKY54=; b=mxMfsnBAO2q9qoqRXJjTotCxYwvyzcY+j6rEnM+hUdOf8EYfW2VjpQxNlZpwBWlmdY kTS30kiManmbHQIITVPU9aCzgMuKQ3RAGgD8uLqHIScJW2Dxvv2rP5Nv3FjTg0bOCW4I XRovcEXhIhyY60QS9JKJI6A8sZXS0pfJijWevknbAwh3XC4DLDUc7B1hDeKk4BlUIWxE 0pk4Gj7fn8zXKNpp7COka0BBTqruu6Xli5s5Q6LUOZf2YCSbuiGEWTnDXRMrQ74gHhdo y1f4P/JzcopwkZL3JDwz9vfSy1mrwkmIq0ISzbM5pxC8dlM21y7ZBi054SK08Lq2rNdh Wl5w== Received: by 10.68.229.73 with SMTP id so9mr729436pbc.163.1332248283616; Tue, 20 Mar 2012 05:58:03 -0700 (PDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.143.1.15 with HTTP; Tue, 20 Mar 2012 05:57:23 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <87haxjfxrs.fsf@gnu.org> References: <87wr6i2ezh.fsf@gnu.org> <4F662E00.5080309@gmx.at> <87ipi1gm6y.fsf@gnu.org> <4F66E6C7.7060708@gmx.at> <87haxjfxrs.fsf@gnu.org> From: Juanma Barranquero Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2012 13:57:23 +0100 Message-ID: Subject: Re: bug#11039: 24.0.94; Window incorrectly getting selected To: Chong Yidong Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Spam-Score: -2.6 (--) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 11039 Cc: martin rudalics , 11039@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.13 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -2.6 (--) On Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 10:05, Chong Yidong wrote: > You seem to be assuming that the user wants to dismiss the help window > immediately, but I don't think that that's a justified assumption. =C2=A0= When > writing Emacs Lisp code, for instance, I like to leave one window open > for the *Help* buffer, and this behavior keeps switching me out of the > code buffer. OTOH, dismissing the help window automatically is what I do like 95% of the time, because I mostly want to remember some detail I've forgotten. In fact, until Martin's new window stuff I used ehelp to make it easier, and resorted to exiting the electric loop in the few cases that I really wanted to keep the help window around. Now I have an entry in `display-buffer-alist' that calls an action function of my own to autoselect all \*Help(.*) windows, regardless of the setting of `help-window-select' (and I'm quite glad of getting rid of ehelp). Which is to say, the "display help / take a look / dismiss at once" pattern isn't unheard of. =C2=A0 =C2=A0 Juanma From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Tue Nov 20 12:04:13 2012 Received: (at control) by debbugs.gnu.org; 20 Nov 2012 17:04:13 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:57118 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1TarF7-0005Pg-II for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 20 Nov 2012 12:04:13 -0500 Received: from fencepost.gnu.org ([208.118.235.10]:46670) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1TarF5-0005Pa-MX for control@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 20 Nov 2012 12:04:11 -0500 Received: from rgm by fencepost.gnu.org with local (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1TarDx-0006tP-5W for control@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 20 Nov 2012 12:03:01 -0500 Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2012 12:03:01 -0500 Message-Id: Subject: control message for bug 12943 To: X-Mailer: mail (GNU Mailutils 2.1) From: Glenn Morris X-Spam-Score: -4.6 (----) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: control X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.13 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -4.6 (----) merge 11039 12943 From unknown Sat Sep 06 00:11:39 2025 Received: (at fakecontrol) by fakecontrolmessage; To: internal_control@debbugs.gnu.org From: Debbugs Internal Request Subject: Internal Control Message-Id: bug archived.
