And all the messages come after "Sending...done".
I have no idea what could be causing this. Do you have any special
customisations when sending email, possibly involving how draft messages
are saved?

no. nndraft-directory is "/home/sds/Mail/" and that is the only setting I have.
the `marks' groups are not mentioned anywhere in .newsrc*

Could you try `M-x debug-on-entry RET nndraft-request-group RET', and
then continue a few times? That will probably tell us what's calling
this.

Hm. Looking at the code, it looks like the problem might be that the
draft server thinks that it has all these bazillion "marks" groups, for
some reason or other.
If you eval `(nndraft-request-list)' and then look in the " *nnpd*"
buffer, are all those groups there? And if so, can you look in
`nndraft-directory' and see whether all those odd directories are in
there?

nndraft-directory
"/home/sds/Mail/"
yes:
marks/news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.mathematics.pari.user
et al
very ugly!
are these directories really necessary?
each one contains just the .marks file - it seems like all this could
live in just a single top-level file...

Nope.

Yup. And that file is called ~/.newsrc.eld. :-)
No Gnus defaults to not using the external marks stuff, and Ma Gnus
removes the code completely.
I have no idea how those directories were created, but if you just
remove them, this problem will probably go away.

yeah, for a time.
now the directories are back and with them the messages.
I have a lot of old messages marked so that I would be able to access
them easily. I already complained that this makes entering a group
_very_ slow; now I also have to contend with these marks/<group>
directories and messages

Does this mean that you've set `gnus-propagate-marks' to t?

into all my nntp select methods?
and, I guess, the same for nnimap-marks-is-evil?

... which is ugly - I would have to put the same two settings in a
handful of server methods...

That shouldn't happen. I've now committed a fix to No Gnus for this.
