Please write in English if possible, because the Emacs maintainers
usually do not have translators to read other languages for them.

Your bug report will be posted to the emacs-pretest-bug <at> gnu.org mailing

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I would like to know what happened with Emacs default font, see images
attached in this email.

I've just downloaded Emacs via CVS and compiled (see image emacs-new.png):

GNU Emacs 23.0.60.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.8.20)
of 2008-10-05 on debian-hfit

My old Emacs was (see image emacs-old.png):

GNU Emacs 23.0.60.2 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.8.20)
of 2008-05-26 on debian-hfit

My ~/.Xresources file is:

Mozilla*font:fixed
Firefox*font:fixed
Emacs*font:fixed

Why the new Emacs default font is proportional instead of monospaced?

If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
   `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
If you would like to further debug the crash, please read the file
/home/download/emacs/share/emacs/23.0.60/etc/DEBUG for instructions.

The font shown in the screenshot you attached is monospaced...

Hmm, yes, indeed, it's monospaced, I should pay more attention.

But the font is another one, why?

In June, we changed Emacs to try using Monospace-12 as the default font,
if Emacs is compiled with XFT support. Monospace should be an
anti-aliased font.

If this change is responsible for what you're seeing, I'm not sure why
the screenshot you provided shows a non-antialiased font.

Could you check if your Emacs is compiled with libxft? Also, what is
the default font you currently see? What does the menu item
Options->Set Default Font show?

Aha. I think you'll find that the font you're seeing is

-sony-fixed-medium-r-normal--16-120-100-100-c-80-iso8859-1

or something like that. I guess the problem is that there is more than
one font named "fixed" in the system. Recently, Handa changed the "font
scoring" system which tells Emacs which font to use when there are
several possibilities.

To get the exact font you want, you can specify an xlfd name like
-misc-fixed-medium-r-*--13-*-*-*-*-*-*-*, or a fontconfig/GTK font name.
For instance,

Emacs*font:Monospace-10

works great for me.

Cool!! That's worked for me too.

Thanks
