I can't reproduce this with today's CVS trunk, so I'm closing the bug.

On gNewSense 2.1, both under Window Maker and GNOME, Emacs starts with
the GNUstep art backend (although there are other issues which I'll
report separately).

With the cairo backend, it crashes just like in #984.
