This really looks like a compiler issue. Using -O[0-4s] all goes fine,  
but using -fast leads to errors. My last try was with:

	time nice +11 env LANG=C PATH=/sw/bin:$PATH ./configure --without- 
sound --without-dbus --without-pop --without-gconf --without-gpm -- 
without-gsettings --without-selinux --without-gif --without-jpeg --

No wide-ints set up, even using the official "-mtune=G4" to overcome  
the G5 optimisation. It leads to:

I'll see whether an X11 variant works better.
