Hi Matthew, thanks for the report.

Consider that 1.11 is already some years old, and, most importantly,
suffers from a know security vulnerability:

  <http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.sysutils.autotools.announce/131>

I'd advise you to install the latest version 1.11.2 instead (or wait
a few more days and install the soon-to-appear 1.11.3 version).

I've tried to run the test case with both automake 1.11 and with the
development version of automake, but couldn't reproduce the bug. Can
you reproduce it consistently? Or does the failure appears racily?

Thanks,
  Stefano

Yes, that would be useful. Even more important, could you send us a
tarball with the contents of the 'stdinc.dir' directory left behind by
the failing test?

Thanks,
  Stefano

Thanks. However, I still cannot reproduce the problem (even using
the contents of the tarball you've sent me). But I've noticed that
all the files in that tarball have *all* the permission bits set:

  $ tar tvf ~/stdinc.dir.tar
  ...
  -rwxrwxrwx 0/0  32933 2012-01-31 19:41 stdinc.dir/config.status
  -rwxrwxrwx 0/0      9 2012-01-31 19:41 stdinc.dir/sub/bar.h
  ...

which is weird... Have you changed their permission before storing
them in the tarball? Maybe the failure you are experiencing is the
result of some weird permission problem/misconfiguration... What is
your umask? Have you installed SELinux on your system?

Could you please post the result of the following commands?

  $ umask
  $ make check TESTS="stdinc.test"
  $ ls -ARZ --full-time stdinc.dir
  $ stat stdinc.dir/sub stdinc.dir/build/sub

Thanks,
  Stefano

I thought you read the libtool lists and also assumed Matthew would
get back with the info from the other list, so I didn't speak up.
Anyway, have a look at this libttol bug:
http://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=10672

Cheers,
Peter

Thanks for the pointer. In fact I'm subscribed to the list, but I hadn't
read the relevant messages until after having sent my previous message.

So, at this point, we can assume the failure is a spurious one. Anyway,
I'll wait one more day or so to hear for confirmation from Matthew,
before I go ahead and close the bug.

Thanks,
  Stefano

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
All bits may have been accidentally set when I scp'ed stdinc.dir to my
Windows machine for inspection.
I sent the .tar from it.

I believe the SELinux is installed by default on CentOS 6.2 and I didn't
change it.

Following the Libtool bug I retrieved the newer 1.11.2 version of Automake
and rebuilt it in a local directory as well but I still get the same failed
stdinc test.

$ umask shows 0022

$ ls -ARZ --full-time stdinc.dir shows the following:

Hi Matthew, sorry for the delay.

Let's hope it's not a SELinux-related bug -- I know basically nothing
about SELinux.

And I still have no idea about what's really going on :-(

Could you try running the attached script, and post its output and results?

Thanks,
  Stefano

The script prints the following to the console:

+ mkdir am.dir
+ cd am.dir
+ cat
+ echo 'int bar () { return 0; }'
+ mkdir sub
+ echo 'choke me'
+ st=0
+ gcc -I. -I./sub -c -o foo.o foo.c
In file included from foo.c:1:
./sub/bar.h:1: error: expected `=', `,', `;', `asm' or `__attribute__'
before `me'
+ echo FAIL 1
FAIL 1
+ st=1
+ rm -f foo.o
++ pwd
+ gcc -I/build-tmp/am.dir -I./sub -c -o foo.o foo.c
In file included from foo.c:1:
./sub/bar.h:1: error: expected `=', `,', `;', `asm' or `__attribute__'
before `me'
+ echo FAIL 2
FAIL 2
+ st=1
+ exit 1

I tar'ed and attached the entire contents of am.dir.

Ah ah! So this is an issue with your compiler, not with Automake (good
for us, bad for you I guess ;-). In fact, the script should work if you
compiler truly gave precedence to the files residing in directories
specified with earlier '-I' options (as it does on my system).

I'm thus closing this bug report as "not an Automake bug". In case you
manage to find out what is wrong with your compiler's setup, feel free
to post it here, as more information might always be welcome by future
readers and bug reporters.

Thanks for your patience, and good luck,
  Stefano

Thank you for your efforts.
Even if it didn't solve the problem I know at least know where to look now.
