Message #5 received at submit <at> debbugs.gnu.org (full text, mbox):
Hi,
I see a very strange problem here. In my INBOX of my mail provider:
(nnimap "Michael_Heerdegen <at> web.de"
(nnimap-address "imap.web.de"))
I have some mails from the GNU bug tracking system, like this one:
[GNU bug Tracking System] bug#10469: closed (Re: bug#10469: 24.0.92; find-name-dired quotes characters in output)
The problem is that they don't show up in the *Summary* buffer. I know
that they are on the server, because when using Icedove on the same
account with imap, I see them. I also see them when using the web
portal of this provider. I used this account for several years now with
Gnus and never had any problem.
First thought this may be due to my setup. No, it isn't. I tried using
emacs -q. I tried without loading the .newsrc/ .newsrc.eld file. I
edited the group parameters. I subscribed to the mail account as a
different user on my OS. I ensured that it's not the kill file. They
are not shown. No chance. Tried several hours.
So I forwarded one of those mails from outside gnus to another mail
account. There, in Gnus again, the *Summary* buffer of this account
shows the message. I forward it again to the other account, with a
different Subject line. It doesn't appear in *Summary*. But if I
delete the whole body of the message before forwarding, I'll see it in
the *Summary* of the first account!
So, Gnus obviously hides messages with certain bodies on this account.
To my big surprise, doing nothing different, but using Emacs 23 instead
of 24, everything is normal, the messages are normally shown in
*Summary*. This fact shows that there is some kind of bug.
I don't know how to debug this. If you give me some hints where to
start, I'll try to debug this.
Thanks,
Michael.

After you enter the group (with RET), and before you choose any
articles, what are the contents of the " *nntpd*" (note leading space)
buffer and the " *nnimap ... nntpd*" buffer?

I think you mean if those missing mails show up there. No, they don't
show up in both of those buffers.
I also have a buffer named *nnimap imap.web.de nil *nntpd**<2> with
this content:
* 10 EXISTS.
* 2 RECENT.
* FLAGS (%Answered %Flagged %Deleted %Seen %Draft).
* OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (%Answered %Flagged %Draft %Deleted %Seen %*)] Unlimited.
* OK [UNSEEN 6] Message 6 is first unseen.
* OK [UIDNEXT 749001339] Predicted next UID.
* OK [UIDVALIDITY 1] UIDs valid.
84 OK [READ-ONLY] EXAMINE completed.
* 2 FETCH (FLAGS (%Seen) UID 749001313).
* 3 FETCH (FLAGS (%Seen) UID 749001331).
* 4 FETCH (FLAGS (%Seen) UID 749001332).
* 5 FETCH (FLAGS (%Seen) UID 749001333).
* 6 FETCH (FLAGS () UID 749001334).
* 7 FETCH (FLAGS () UID 749001335).
* 8 FETCH (FLAGS () UID 749001336).
* 9 FETCH (FLAGS (%Recent) UID 749001337).
* 10 FETCH (FLAGS (%Recent) UID 749001338).
85 OK UID FETCH completed.

Michael.

If the header of the message don't appear in the nnimap buffer, then
your IMAP server isn't sending the message to you.

Ok. But if I use Gnus on Emacs 23, I can read those messages, and
with Emacs 23, these messages _do_ appear in the nnimap buffer.
I also verified that the IMAP server is sending those messages to
Thunderbird.
So, there's still a problem to solve. What in Emacs 24 causes the IMAP
server to send an incomplete message list?
Regards,
Michael.

I tried to debug this with
(debug-on-entry (quote nnimap-send-command))
and, I guess, successfully.
The missing mails appear in the
*nnimap imap.web.de nil *nntpd**
buffer, but they are removed by `nnimap-transform-headers'.
This is how one of the disappearing mails looks like in that buffer:

The problem seems to be that
(looking-at "\\* [0-9]+ FETCH.+?UID \\([0-9]+\\)")
fails for those mails.

Yes, you are totally correct.
I think I've now fixed this bug in No Gnus (and it will be in Emacs 24
in not too long a time). Could you check whether it works for you now?

Yes, it works - all messages appear in the summary now.
